High Flight – a poignant poem known by flyers throughout the world.

“I am enclosing a verse I wrote the other day. It started at 30,000 feet, and was finished soon after I landed. I thought it might interest you.” With much love to all from John.

John Magee wrote this to his mother in 1941, only months before his death. The poem has been translated into more than twenty languages, is known by heart by pilots all over the world and is recited in prayer by passengers with fear of flying. Most famously, President Ronald Reagan quoted from it in a television address to the American nation after the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded on January 26th 1986.

John Magee was killed in an air accident over the fields of Lincolnshire, near Wellingore airfield. He is buried at a nearby military graveyard with other pilots of the Royal Canadian Air Force who also gave their lives to defend England from the German invasion by air.

The story of John Magee will be told in the book “Chase the shouting wind” (taken from one of the lines in John’s poem) which documents in detail his extraordinary yet short life. Drawn from an archive of thousands of previously unpublished papers in the possession of the author, this book will provide a unique insight into the outstanding development and achievements of this brilliant young man.

The book will be published in the Spring of 2010 and pre-publication orders are now being taken. The publication price will be £30.00 including p&p in the UK.
